Scientific Drilling is looking for an Engineering Technician to work at our Applied Technologies Center in Paso Robles, CA.  Scientific Drilling is an independent directional drilling and wellbore navigation, surveying and logging Service Company serving customers worldwide.  Our industry leading navigation systems provide definitive wellbore placement information, enabling safer and more efficient placement of tightly spaced wellbores throughout the world.  We are motivated by crafting innovative and elegant solutions to technically challenging problems. 

Nestled between San Francisco and Los Angeles, the California Central Coast is the location described as the happiest place on earth.  Home to where others vacation, including 200+ wineries, fresh air, miles of beautiful beaches, and small town appeal. Our Engineering Technician position will be working in our Manufacturing department.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Initially ~80% of essential duties will include assembly & test of intricate mechanical and electrical components required to build prototype downhole sonde tools, test cables and test boxes.  ~20% of time will include assembly & test of large (100lb to 200lb) collar based tools including utilizing a gantry crane and Torque Master break-out machine (training will be provided).  The ratio between types of work will change and depends on the projects currently being developed within engineering.
  • Lay out, build, test, troubleshoot, repair, and modify developmental and production electronic and mechanical components, parts, equipment, and systems, applying best practices of engineering and manufacturing.
  • Support the engineering group with assembly, documentation, and test of engineering prototypes.
  • Test and troubleshoot electronics and/or mechanical instruments according to written procedures.
  • Read blueprints, wiring diagrams, schematic drawings, or engineering instructions for assembling electronics units, applying knowledge of electronic theory and components.
  • Read dials and meters to determine amperage, voltage, electrical output and input at specific operating temperature to analyze parts performance.
  • Manufacture electrical wiring harnesses using hand crimp tools and/or soldering iron.
  • Record and preserve manufacturing data, test results, and equipment utilized to build or test prototypes.
  • Use multi-meters and oscilloscopes to measure amperage, voltage, waveform, electrical output and input at specific operating temperature to analyze parts performance.
  • Perform basic mechanical inspections utilizing calipers, micrometers, height gauges and other basic inspection equipment.
  • Responsible for maintaining a clean and safe work area including maintenance of equipment and tools.
  • Adhere to and improve safety standards.
  • Manage work station and practice good housekeeping techniques.
  • May be required to work overtime.

  • Perform other relevant duties as assigned by the needs of the business.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of various goods and services.
  • Knowledge of electronic components on schematics and circuit boards.
  • Must understand common electronic concepts, such as current, voltage, resistance, and Ohm's Law.
  • Must be able to understand and apply precision technical plans, electrical schematics, blueprints, drawings, and models.
  • Manual dexterity and ability to use common hand tools.
  • The ability to use correct soldering tools and techniques.
  • Ability to work in fast paced and results driven environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to multitask.
  • Good organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to present oneself with professional appearance and behavior in accordance with ATC dress code and SDI Code of Conduct.
  • Ability to meet all SDI/ATC safety requirements.
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions.
  • Ability to read, communicate, and understand the English language.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with managers and peers, both written and verbally.

Education, Experience, Certification, and Training:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Associate's Degree in Electronics or equivalent work-related experience.
  • 2-8+ years of experience assembling and testing mechanical devices containing electronics.
  • Manufacturing test experience and a working knowledge of electronic and/or mechanical parts.
  • Proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Experience reading schematics, blueprints and/or technical drawings.
