Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Well Planning Manager is responsible for generating a planned drilling trajectory based upon customer requirements and preferences, supplied geologic data, target locations, and area specific standard drilling practices and parameters. Supervises peers and subordinates to ensure customer and company objectives are met. Work with engineers and customers to gather preliminary data and design well plans in customary formats. Work with property lines to ensure that the well stays within leased property using ARCGIS, Geological Editor, and DOGGR website. Calculate well paths using information provided by client's engineers and geologists using Compass. Prepare planning reports, anti-collision reports, preliminary plots, wall plots and anti-collision spider plots for clients, SDI office, and field use using Compass and/or Kelly Down. Update appropriate databases with daily surveys provided by SDI field personnel using Field Cap, Kelly Down and/or Compass. Assist field personnel in monitoring PVA (plan vs. actual). Provide PVA plots and reports to clients at desired intervals using Compass and/or Kelly Down. Prepare reports for MMS, other like-kind governmental bodies, when applicable using Compass and/or DOGGR website. Prepare EOW (End of Well) reports and plots for clients and SDI office at the end of each job using Compass and/or Kelly Down. Go On-site or to client site to consult with drilling personnel regarding wellbore position and other issues related to well planning, e.g. to develop alternative well plans. Mentor less experienced well planners to proliferate lessons learned and best practices. Support district well planners and engineers to cover peak loads, provide computer support, and solve problems. Provide well planning and engineering support for tenders, initial support when launching new districts using MS Word, Excel and/or Power Point. Participate in industry specific best practices groups such as SPE, SPWLA, AADE, IADD, etc. Actively collaborates with Scientific Drilling personnel and client experts writing industry papers that propel recognition of Scientific Drilling as an industry leader. Database Migration of Survey Data using Compass, Data Migration Software and/or SQL.  Responsible for Database Migration of Survey Data (Compass, Data Migration Software, SQL) in creating custom and impromptu database reports based on requests made by clients and field operations staff.  Install, configure and maintain database system hardware/software, including back-ups to the company main server.  Evaluate computer equipment and software needs and make recommendations for the purchase of hardware/software equipment upgrades.  Assist with the use and development of required forms then communicate and resolve a variety of issues generated through the IT Unit's Helpdesk system via phone, email or in person, and determine an effective solution to incorporate into the existing software process from personal computer skill knowledge or outside sources as necessary.  Extend training of staff in the field operation about the software process so that it meets the accuracy of data's requirements for the drilling operations. This position is non-managerial and has no hiring or firing authority over the direct reports and no budgetary authority.

 

Education, Experience, Certification and Training

Minimum of a Bachelor's degree (or foreign equivalent) in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics or closely related field and 5 years of experience in well planning. Experience must include 5 years in planning SAGD wells or Abandonment wells utilizing Active or Passive Magnetic Ranging. Must also have 5 years of experience in: directional drilling, MWD, or Gyroscopic Surveying; landmark software (Compass etc.); well planning and data gathering software (ARCGIS, Geological Editor etc.). Up to 35% local travel required to customer locations. Must apply by 03/31/2018.
