Scientific Drilling International (SDI) is looking for a Mechanical Engineer to work in our Motor Engineering Group at the SDI Houston Technology Center in Houston, TX.  Scientific Drilling is an independent directional drilling and wellbore navigation, surveying and logging Service Company serving customers worldwide.  Our industry leading navigation systems provide definitive wellbore placement information, enabling safer and more efficient placement of tightly spaced wellbores throughout the world.  We are motivated by crafting innovative and elegant solutions to technically challenging problems. 

Key Job Functions:

  • Research, design, develop, and test steerable drilling motor components, complete drilling motors and related products using mechanical engineering theory and application principles.
  • Evaluate performance of commercially released motors, prototypes and proposals and recommend repair or design modifications, based on factors such as environment and system capabilities.
  • Develop and utilize apparatus and procedures to test motor components or motors in the Engineering workshop.
  • Lead prototype motor assembly and disassembly and detailed parts evaluation
  • Provide technical support in the Engineering workshop by building, repairing, servicing and maintaining steerable drilling motors
  • Willingness to provide hands-on assistance to shop personnel (getting your hands dirty) to get the job done
  • Prepare engineering documents and specifications for product and systems operation.
  • Examine schematics, technical drawings, and supporting documents to develop, compute and verify specifications, such as configuration of parts, dimensions and tolerances.
  • Perform engineering duties in planning and designing tools and mechanically functioning equipment.
  • Lead the integration of product design and structure into the Company's new or existing systems.
  • Define structural design of products for drafters and designers using computer-assisted design (CAD) software including SolidWorks.
  • Address customer and field service reliability and safety issues with timely engineering analysis and design solutions.
  • Adhere to and improve safety standards.
  • Mentor other engineers and/or manufacturing staff in the technical aspects of design, test, and documentation.
  • Provide technical support and instruction to team members or customers regarding equipment standards and operation.
  • Evaluate failed system scenarios and determine root-cause in conformance with the Quality Management System (QMS).
  • Occasional domestic or international travel may be required
  • Manage work station and practice good housekeeping techniques.
  • Pursue every job with drive and determination.

  • Perform other relevant duties as assigned by the needs of the business.
  • Maintain inventory of R&D stock.
  • Initiate new projects and determine project costs.

  • Proven skills with machines and tools in the workshop, including design, use, repair and maintenance.
  • Development of technical documentation using a combination of CAD, MS Office, and other resources.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline.
  • 2-10 years' experience as a mechanical engineer in the field of steerable drilling motors and related products.
  • Strong proficiency with SolidWorks.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with advanced computational software (Ansys FEA, CFD).
  • Experience with Product Data Management software SolidWorks EPDM
  • Experience with ISO 9001 and ANSI Y14.5

Equipment & Software Knowledge

  • CAD software (SolidWorks preferred)
  • Corporate ERP systems (SAP preferred).
  • MS Office Word, Power Point and Excel.
