Scientific Drilling is looking for an Emerging Technology Specialist/Engineer to work at our Applied Technologies Center in Paso Robles, CA.  Scientific Drilling is an independent directional drilling and wellbore navigation, surveying and logging Service Company serving customers worldwide.  Our industry leading navigation systems provide definitive wellbore placement information, enabling safer and more efficient placement of tightly spaced wellbores throughout the world.  We are motivated by crafting innovative and elegant solutions to technically challenging problems. 

Nestled between San Francisco and Los Angeles, the California Central Coast is the location described as the happiest place on earth.  Home to where others vacation, including 200+ wineries, fresh air, miles of beautiful beaches, and small town appeal. Our Emerging Technology Specialist/Engineer position will be working in our Engineering department.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for safe execution of tests, training and support operations at SDI field and office worksites worldwide. Strive to raise the bar for all operators, and challenge those around them to push Scientific Drilling to new heights.
  • Work with Project Managers and Technical Product Champions to develop field tests and objectives which adequately qualify products for general field operation.
  • Responsible for preparation of equipment prior to field tests and jobs, including work with operations and engineering to ensure all equipment is available in the correct location and on-time.
  • Execute tests in the field or lab in accordance with stated test objectives, and assists in defining test objectives.
  • Complete follow-up of all tests, including collection of all relevant data. Feedback all information to relevant stakeholders.
  • Create post-test reports and analysis.
  • Provide field-level analysis of test results or objectives. Provide experience and insight towards satisfaction of these goals.
  • Provide on-the-job technical training to field operations personnel on the safe and correct use and application of new products and technologies.
  • Responsible for ensuring that assigned commercial jobs are performed with the highest level of precision and correctness and service quality within Scientific Drilling.
  • Work with technical writing and QMS department to create documentation and/or procedures for operations use.
  • Provide 24-hour coverage to field jobs as required.
  • Assist in the development of training materials.
  • May be called on to provide support in formalized training systems. (Classroom training, e.g.)
  • Provide operational insight to engineering to help build products which are ultimately more effective in the field.
  • Identify changes, both operational and technical, which can improve the safety, correctness, or usability of products in the field.
  • Identify opportunities to improve service quality
  • Prepare project related reports, presentations, memorandums, proposals and correspondence as well as attend meetings relating to projects in which they are involved.
  • Extensive travel up to 60%, both domestic and international.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Proven skills in the practical application of engineering science and technology including applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment for testing of mechanical, electronic and software components.
  • Proficiency in written and verbal communication in the English language.
  • Proven knowledge of the Oil and Gas Service industry in product-line related technologies and applications.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with managers, field personnel, and peers.
  • Interaction with leadership, engineering, co-workers, customers, field personnel and all other levels of the organization.

Education, Experience, Certification and Training:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • 2+ years of experience in engineering and/or direct industry experience in a multi-disciplinary engineering field.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Knowledge of oil field technologies including MWD, LWD, Production Logging, Directional Drilling and/or Survey.
  • Knowledge of running and testing product line technologies.
  • Experience providing customer support and training to field operations preferred.
  • Experience in providing clear and concise written specifications to the Engineering team preferred.


Location, Physical Requirements, and PPE

  • Ability to walk, stand, sit ,kneel, push ,stoop, crawl, twist, reach above the shoulder, grasp, pull, bend repeatedly, climb stairs and ladders ,identify colors, hear with aid, see, write, count, read, speak, analyze, alphabetize, lift and carry 70 lbs and over, perceive depth, operate a motor vehicle and operate motor equipment.
  • Conditions include working inside and outside in all types of weather.  Working around moving objects, moving vehicles and machines with moving parts.  Working around radiant and electrical energy.  Working closely with others, working alone, working extended or irregular hours and travelling by all possible modes of transportation.  Working environment may include but not limited to excessive, intermittent or constant noise, fumes, smoke, gases, grease, dust, oils and solvents. 
  • Equipment (machines, tools, devices) used in performing the essential job function include but not limited to computer and related equipment, calculator, special instrumentation, forklift, pallet jack, hand tools, power tools, air tools, telephone, and automobile.  Ability to wear proper personal protective equipment (PPE), including but not limited to, safety glasses, hardhat, reinforced toed shoes, coveralls, gloves, and ear plugs or muffs.
