Scientific Drilling is looking for a Mechanical Engineer II (Gyro Team) to work at our Applied Technologies Center in Paso Robles, CA.  Scientific Drilling is an independent directional drilling and wellbore navigation, surveying and logging Service Company serving customers worldwide.  Our industry leading navigation systems provide definitive wellbore placement information, enabling safer and more efficient placement of tightly spaced wellbores throughout the world.  We are motivated by crafting innovative and elegant solutions to technically challenging problems. 

Nestled between San Francisco and Los Angeles, the California Central Coast is the location described as the happiest place on earth.  Home to where others vacation, including 200+ wineries, fresh air, miles of beautiful beaches, and small town appeal. This Mechanical Engineer position will be working in our Sustaining Engineering department.

The purpose of this position is to improve Company's quality of service and business results by providing all aspects of engineering support for design and manufacturing of downhole tools and sensor technologies

Key Job Function

  • Research, design, develop, and test mechanical components and systems using mechanical engineering theory and application principles.
  • Design mechanical systems and components for use in down-hole drilling and production logging applications where tools must function to 150C+ temperatures and survive a high vibration environment.
  • Evaluate operational systems and prototypes and recommend design, build, test, or repair modifications to improve product quality, reliability, or cost.
  • Develop and utilize apparatus and procedures to test mechanical components and systems.
  • Assist in improving manufacturing processes by researching, designing or modifying, and evaluating manufacturing methods and equipment.  
  • Design various tooling to support engineering testing or manufacturing/inspection requirements.
  • Create and edit written procedures and process documentation.
  • Examine schematics, technical drawings, and supporting documents to develop, compute and verify specifications, such as configuration of parts, dimensions and tolerances.
  • Lead planning and coordinate execution of engineering and production changes or temporary deviations in accordance with Company's Quality Management System.
  • Lead the integration of all aspects of product design and structure into the Company's new or existing systems.
  • Define structural design of products for drafters and designers using computer-assisted design (CAD) software including SolidWorks.
  • Address customer and field service reliability and safety issues with timely engineering analysis and design solutions.
  • Evaluate failed system scenarios and determine root-cause in conformance with the Quality Management System (QMS).
  • Adhere to and improve safety standards.
  • Mentor other engineers and/or manufacturing staff in the technical aspects of design, test, and documentation.
  • Provide technical support and instruction to team members or customers regarding equipment standards and operation.
  • May act as a functional lead on engineering projects with team members, project managers, customers, vendors or other business partners.
  • Travel domestically or internationally may be required, up to 10%.
  • Manage work station and practice good housekeeping techniques.
  • Pursue every job with drive and determination.

  • Perform other relevant duties as assigned by the needs of the business.
  • Assist in maintain inventory of engineering stock.
  • Initiate new projects and determine project costs.

Key Job Competencies

  • Knowledge and proven skills in the use of practical application of mechanical engineering science and technology including applying principles (mathematics, statics, dynamics, heat transfer, etc.), techniques, procedures, and equipment to test and production.
  • Proven skills with machines and tools, including design, use, repair and maintenance.
  • Development of technical documentation using a combination of CAD, MS Office, and other resources.
  • Strong technical capabilities in design execution and product development.
  • Ability to work in fast paced and results driven environment.
  • Very strong attention to detail and ability to multitask.
  • Good organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to present oneself with professional appearance and behavior in accordance with ATC dress code and SDI Code of Conduct.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline.
  • 2-10 years' experience as a mechanical engineer.
  • Strong proficiency with SolidWorks.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with ISO 9001 and ANSI Y14.5.
  • Experience with advanced computational software (FEA, CFD).
