Scientific Drilling is looking for a Shipping & Receiving Supervisor to work at our Applied Technologies Center in Paso Robles, CA.  Scientific Drilling is an independent directional drilling and wellbore navigation, surveying and logging Service Company serving customers worldwide.  Our industry leading navigation systems provide definitive wellbore placement information, enabling safer and more efficient placement of tightly spaced wellbores throughout the world.  We are motivated by crafting innovative and elegant solutions to technically challenging problems.

The Shipping and Receiving Supervisor is responsible for the shipping and receiving of product to customers both international and domestically. The Shipping and Receiving Supervisor is responsible for the accuracy of shipments meeting all U.S. federal Trade standards as well as all required documentation and adhering to all appropriate document record keeping requirements.  This person plans, orders and directs all activities in the shipping and receiving department ensuring all team members are working proficiently and safely. This job requires the seamless streamline of the movement of goods for our customers, utilizing the utmost amount of professionalism and communication between carriers, freight forwarders, Customs Officers, Airlines, brokers, LTL service providers, and any other utilized transportation service providers to provide the best customer service experience possible for all customers that this position will entail Importing/Exporting for.

Key Job Functions

  • Coordinating and overseeing incoming and outgoing shipping (domestic and international) activities to ensure accuracy, completeness and proper conditions of shipments.
  • Ensures all international exports and imports meet all U.S. federal trade regulations.
  • Ensures all outbound shipments are correctly classified as dangerous or not.
  • Processes all dangerous goods shipments.
  • Strictly adheres to all IATA/CFR 49 regulations when shipping dangerous goods.
  • Ensures the accuracy of reporting to the U.S. Census Bureau when exports require.
  • Oversees imports and ensures the correctness of applicable duties, taxes, and reporting as well as adhering to all U.S. import regulations.
  • Plans and organizes activities for the Shipping and Receiving department including packing, quote request, dispatching, loading, unloading, verification, and receiving.
  • Is knowledgeable and able to perform every specific job function of the shipping and receiving department with accuracy and proficiency.
  • Provides team members with support when needed.
  • Determines and arranges methods of shipments based on district needs, shop needs, rates, etc.
  • Ensures all outgoing shipments meet proper specifications and are packed correctly.
  • Prepares and directs the preparation of all shipping documents and properly retention as per document retention procedures.
  • Coordinates the follow up of each shipment to ensure timely deliveries and credit for service failures.
  • Process all shipments movements including in SAP and/or other processing systems.
  • Determining work procedures, preparing work schedules and expediting workflow.
  • Coordinates delivery of hot shipments through appropriate freight companies per requested delivery dates of districts and outside customers.
  • Develops process improvements with vendors in the areas of cost, safety, timely performance, service quality, and other aspects as necessary.
  • Supervises receiving and shipping dock ensuring all team members are working safely.
  • Ensures and oversees the accurate and timely receipt of all items in system and all goods are delivered to appropriate department.
  • Communicates with team members on district needs.
  • Communicates with districts on all goods movements in a timely manner.
  • Investigating and solving customer problems and issues.
  • Answers questions of SDI employees on possible shipments and those shipment requirements.
  • Loads and unloads freight trucks as necessary.
  • Updates and maintains shipping and receiving procedure manual.
  • Orders supplies from various vendors, keeping shipping and receiving stock ample and available at all times.
  • Audits shipments for Trade Compliance following strict guidelines and check lists.
  • Ensures that adequate personnel are available at all times within department.
  • Adheres to safety standards with Company HSE policies and ensuring all team members are working safely.
  • Adheres and lead by example on 5S practices.
  • Manage work station and practice good housekeeping techniques.
  • May be required to work overtime.

Required Qualifications

  • High School graduation or equivalent.
  • Must be familiar with varied carrier service providers
  • Must be familiar with standard U.S. import and export regulations.
  • Must be familiar with all tools to ensure proper handling/labeling/packing.
  • Must be familiar with varied country shipping documentation requirements
  • Must take a Dangerous Goods Awareness Class, and be able to instruct the class if the Chain Supply Manager requests such.
  • Must have taken a Dangerous Goods Regulations Class, certifying the knowledge to properly handle, label, ship and fill out a Dangerous Goods form, satisfy The Companies required regulations to ship by air.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1-5 years of shipping and receiving experience
  • 2 years of supervisory experience or demonstrated supervisory skills
  • Experience with Lean Manufacturing
  • SAP experience.
  • Forklift experience.
  • Inventory experience
  • Experience with Export Filling using ACE.
  • Dangerous Goods Certification

Equipment & Software Knowledge

Equipment and software used in performing the essential job functions include but are not limited to:

  • SAP
  • Corporate ERP systems.
  • MS Office Word, Power Point and Excel.
  • Ability to navigate all government websites pertaining to export regulations proficiently including but not limited to; B.I.S. U.S. Department of Commerce, U.S. Customs and Border Protection ACE Secure Data Portal, U.S. Harmonized Tariff Schedule.
  • UPS Worldship / FedEx Shipmanager
  • Ability able to navigate FedEx / UPS / DHL / TNT internet sites proficiently
