Scientific Drilling is looking for a Manufacturing Engineer to work at our Applied Technologies Center in Paso Robles, CA.  Scientific Drilling is an independent directional drilling and wellbore navigation, surveying and logging Service Company serving customers worldwide.  Our industry leading navigation systems provide definitive wellbore placement information, enabling safer and more efficient placement of tightly spaced wellbores throughout the world.  We are motivated by crafting innovative and elegant solutions to technically challenging problems.

Key Job Functions

  • Utilize apparatus and procedures to test electronic components, circuits and systems for line support and in-process failure analysis.
  • Perform operational maintenance and testing of electronic products, components, equipment and systems using knowledge of electronic theory and application principles.
  • Assist in the qualification of electronic circuits and components for use in down-hole drilling and production logging applications where tools must function to 150C+ temperatures and survive a high vibration environment.
  • Review schematics, technical drawings, and supporting documents for manufacturing, and verify specifications, such as configuration of parts, dimensions and tolerances.
  • Improve product drawings, schematics and specifications; makes recommendations for changes to Engineering documentation through ECO/ECR.
  • Continual Process Improvement; refines, upgrades, and modifies the manufacturing process to promote efficiency, cost effectiveness, and quality.
  • Plans manufacturing processes for space utilization, process optimization, and work force efficiency. Identifies, installs and supports new manufacturing equipment.
  • New Product Integration: Attends design review meetings and works with Engineering on new products to ensure manufacturability.
  • Designs various tooling to support manufacturing/inspection requirements.
  • Works with purchasing and vendors for compliance to quality standards.
  • Meets Environmental compliance.
  • Trains for in-plant safety.
  • Trains manufacturing staff.
  • Works independently and within team environment.
  • Manage workstation and practice good housekeeping techniques.
  • Pursue every job with drive and determination.
  • Use logic to solve problems with effective solutions.
  • Perform other relevant duties as assigned by the needs of the business.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (Electronic, Computer, Manufacturing) or equivalent applicable engineering experience.
  • 0-2+ years of engineering experience in a dynamic manufacturing environment.
  • Proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel, Visio, Outlook, PowerPoint).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in IPC-610, IPC-620, J-STD.
  • Experience in SMT and thru-hole components.
  • Experience in Python, C#, CAD (not required).
  • Familiarity with ISO 9001 and ANSI Y14.5.
  • Experience with SolidWorks.
  • Familiar with Lean Concepts.

Physical Job Requirements

Manufacturing:

  • Ability to walk, stand, sit, kneel, push, stoop, reach above the shoulder, grasp, pull, bend repeatedly, identify colors, hear with aid, see, write, count, read, speak, analyze, alphabetize, lift and carry 25 lbs. and under, perceive depth, and operate motor equipment.
  • Conditions include working inside.  Working around moving objects, machines with moving parts.  Working around radiant and electrical energy.  Work with heated soldering iron and flux. Working closely with others, working alone, working extended and/or irregular hours.  Working environment may include but not limited to, intermittent noise, fumes, smoke, grease, dust, oils and solvents. 
  • Equipment (machines, tools, devices) used in performing the essential job function include but not limited to computer and related equipment, calculator, special instrumentation, hand tools, power tools, air tools, microscope and telephone.  Ability to wear proper personal protective equipment (PPE), including but not limited to, safety glasses, reinforced toed shoes, gloves, and ear plugs or muffs.

Office:

  • Ability to walk, stand, sit, kneel, push, stoop, reach above the shoulder, grasp, pull, bend repeatedly, climb stairs, identify colors, hear with aid, see, write, count, read, speak, analyze, alphabetize, lift and carry under 25 lbs., perceive depth and operate a motor vehicle.
  • Conditions may include working inside and/or outside.  May work around machines with moving parts and moving objects.  Working near radiant and electrical energy.  Working closely with others or working alone.  Working extended and/or irregular hours and travelling by all possible modes of transportation.
  • Equipment (machines, tools, devices) used in performing the essential job function include but not limited to computers and related equipment, calculators, copiers, fax machines, telephone and vehicles.  Ability to wear proper personal protective equipment (PPE), including but not limited to, safety glasses, hardhat, reinforced toed shoes, coveralls, gloves, and ear plugs or muffs.
