Scientific Drilling is looking for a Sr. or Principal Research Engineer to work at our Applied Technologies Center in Paso Robles, CA.  Scientific Drilling is an independent directional drilling and wellbore navigation, surveying and logging service company serving customers worldwide. 


We are looking for a Sr. Research Engineer/Technical Advisor to be a key part of a small collaborative team focused on further advancement of our inertial navigation systems.  Our industry leading navigation systems provide definitive wellbore placement information, enabling safer and more efficient placement of tightly spaced wellbores throughout the world.  We are motivated by crafting innovative and elegant solutions to technically challenging problems.



  • Designs, develops, and provides recommendations for the continued improvement of
    • navigation algorithms
    • control algorithms
    • sensor and system performance/error models
    • custom and off-the-shelf inertial sensors (gyroscopes and accelerometers)
  • Become a technical expert on our existing gyroscopic survey systems
  • Collaborates at a systems level with a multi-disciplinary team
  • Creates clear technical design documentation and implementation specifications
  • Conducts, analyzes and documents field and lab test results



  • Passionate problem solver
  • Knowledgeable in the state-of-the-art of inertial sensors, navigation algorithms (applied optimal estimation), physical systems modeling, and control systems
  • Experience developing and debugging in MATLAB and/or C/C++/Java
  • Good communication skills and excellent attention to detail
  • PhD (AERO, EE, ME, MATH) with 5+ years' work experience preferred. Master's degree with 10+ years' experience will also be considered.


Preferred Skills/Experience:

  • Hands-on inertial systems design and implementation experience

Due to the breadth of technology at SDI, there is the potential for you to engage in problems beyond the inertial navigation domain (ex. automated directional drilling, communications systems, physical systems modeling, acoustics, ranging).  This is one of the truly unique things about SDI and oilfield technology.
