Scientific Drilling is looking for a Technical Writer to work at our Applied Technologies Center in Paso Robles, California.  Scientific Drilling is an independent directional drilling and wellbore navigation, surveying and logging Service Company serving customers worldwide.  Our industry leading navigation systems provide definitive wellbore placement information, enabling safer and more efficient placement of tightly spaced wellbores throughout the world.  We are motivated by crafting innovative and elegant solutions to technically challenging problems.

The Technical Writer position will draft manufacturing procedures, generate illustrations, and gather data in the fast-paced Paso Robles facility, with an aim for smooth and efficient flow of work to meet demands and maintain target dates.

Key Job Functions

  • Drafts Manufacturing Procedures.
  • Gathers data:
  • Uses documents such as ECNs, BOMs, assembly drawings, etc.
  • Interviews technical staff
  • Observes assembly process
  • Generates illustrations (photos, drawings).
  • Generates text.
  • Builds procedure in approved template.
  • Passes procedure on for review.
  • Formats ISO procedures in approved template.
  • Edits ISO procedures for clarity and correct usage.
  • Maintains Manufacturing Procedures.
  • Maintains ISO Procedures.
  • Adhere to safety standards with Company HSE policies.
  • Manage workstation and practice good housekeeping techniques.
  • May be required to work overtime.
  • Pursue every job with drive and determination.
  • Use logic to solve problems with effective solutions.
  • Perform other relevant duties as assigned by the needs of the business.

Key Job Competencies

  • Adequate command of the tools required for document creation, such as MS Word, Photoshop, etc.
  • Understand the mechanical and electrical process being documented to the level required to write the procedure.
  • Create and edit graphics for procedure illustrations.
  • Experience writing procedures in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience working in an ISO 900x environment.
  • Ability to work in fast paced and results driven environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to multitask.
  • Good organizational and communication skills.
  • Learn quickly and adapt to new problems and situations.
  • Ability to present oneself with professional appearance and behavior in accordance with ATC dress code and SDI Code of Conduct.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related area of study or 1 year related work experience
  • Strong analytical, verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize workload effectively in a fast-paced, changing environment
  • Proficient in MRP systems
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Word and Excel

 Location, Physical Requirements and PPE

  • Ability to walk, stand, sit, kneel, push, stoop, reach above the shoulder, grasp, pull, bend repeatedly, climb stairs, identify colors, hear with aid, see, write, count, read, speak, analyze, alphabetize, lift and carry under 25 lbs., perceive depth and operate a motor vehicle.
  • Conditions may include working inside and/or outside.  May work around machines with moving parts and moving objects.  Working near radiant and electrical energy.  Working closely with others or working alone.  Working extended or irregular hours and travelling by all possible modes of transportation.
  • Equipment (machines, tools, devices) used in performing the essential job function include but not limited to computers and related equipment, calculators, copiers, fax machines, telephone and vehicles.  Ability to wear proper personal protective equipment (PPE), including but not limited to, safety glasses, hardhat, reinforced toed shoes, coveralls, gloves, and ear plugs or muffs.
