Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Position Summary:

Under the direction & Supervision of the Facility Supervisor & PGL Lead Technician performs the duties associated with Maintenance Standards within the designated RSS Product Group Line.

The technician should be capable of working autonomously on tasks listed in the Rotary Steerable System (RSS) Competency Standard, e.g. troubleshoot, test, repair, maintain and overhaul, perform visual inspection of electro-mechanical assemblies, build new, all RSS tools run by Scientific Drilling, and prepare tools for field service.


Duties and Responsibilities:

         Perform cleaning, inspection and testing of all RSS Product as listed in the RSS Competency Standard in accordance with the appropriate Maintenance & Service Instructions and complete all associated documentation including status tagging, etc.

         Perform diagnostic tests on both assemblies and subassemblies of the RSS systems

         Maintain & Overhaul assemblies and subassemblies of the RSS systems, e.g. identify, log and replace worn out tool components

         Perform asset repairs including the replacement of subassemblies e.g. mechanical/electronic sub component

         Perform Calibrations & Verifications as required including: Hydraulic Force, QC Rolls and associated documentation

         Assemble and run functional & qualification tests, troubleshooting final product with software and hardware and complete associated documentation.

         Complete all R&M Documentation, such as check lists, maintenance records, inventory sheets, as required Pre- and Post - Job and ensure both electronic and hard copy systems are maintained, work within the SAP MRP/ERP or other systems

         Deliver on time high quality RSS systems to operations, that strictly adhere to RSS Competency Standard

         Work overtime as required to deliver to department commitments, as required.

         Proactively provide input and discussion pertaining to safety, processes, workflows, or reliability as appropriate for continual improvement of tools, work areas, or procedures.

         Assists and understudies the Tech III & Senior Technician.

         Assist in & Develop skills in tests, troubleshooting and failure analysis of assets and update documentation as appropriate

         Completes and re-certifies in all basic training requirements including Safety Training, ESD Awareness, Lithium Battery Safety and any other assigned ELM Training.

         Works with SAP software, product data management database, quality notification system, inventory management and time entry system.

         Demonstrate a commitment to safety in the workplace.

         Ensure that hand tooling and equipment is correctly maintained and report deficiencies.

         Ensure a clean workplace through exceptional housekeeping practices.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


         Technical Knowledge of Drilling Systems products & Services

         Exposure to oil field services

         Exposure to a technical vocation

         Exposure to torque master, overhead cranes & fork lift operations



         Experience as a Level I Technician

         Knowledge of utilization of calipers, micrometers, height gauges, protractors and ring gauges

         Able to read and understand blueprints and schematics, manuals and other materials to determine specifications.

         Working knowledge on complex mechanical assemblies

         Ability to understand and work with hydraulic / electronic / electromechanical systems

         Able to follow and work with mechanical and electronics assembly procedures

         Ability to identify and communicate technical problems by using logical troubleshooting techniques

         Electrical Skills including metering

         Basic Computing skills with exposure to data entry & office platforms.

         Ability to work in team environment

         Excellent communication Skills, both written and verbally, Organization & Self-Motivation



Education, Experience, Certification and Training

         High School Diploma or equivalent

         Experience in oil field or military equipment maintenance

         Hands on training with mechanical, hydraulic, or electronic tools and equipment

         Proven capability to identify and solve problems

         Working knowledge of basic office software including: MS Excel, MS Word, MS Outlook, MS Outlook Calendar, MS PowerPoint, Skype, Internet Explorer


Work Environment , Physical Job Requirements and PPE

         Ability to walk, stand, sit, kneel, push, stoop, reach above the shoulder, grasp, pull, bend repeatedly, climb stairs, identify colors, hear with aid, see, write, count, read, speak, analyze, alphabetize, lift and carry under 45 lbs., perceive depth and operate a motor vehicle.

         Conditions may include working inside and/or outside. May work around machines with moving parts and moving objects. Working near radiant and electrical energy. Working closely with others or working alone. Working extended or irregular hours and travelling by all possible modes of transportation.

         Equipment (machines, tools, devices) used in performing the essential job function include but not limited to computers and related equipment, calculators, copiers, fax machines, telephone and vehicles. Ability to wear proper personal protective equipment (PPE), including but not limited to, safety glasses, hardhat, reinforced toed shoes, coveralls, gloves, and ear plugs or muffs.
